The Tangential is a creative writing blog I co-founded in January 2011 with Becky Lang and Katie Sisneros. Our motto is, “Don’t be boring. Don’t suck.” Becky and Katie and I now co-edit The Tangential with Sarah Heuer, Heidi Thomasoni, Emily Weiss, and Jason Zabel; and I write for the site often. In early 2013 we published our first book: Future Cities, a compilation of short fiction that includes stories by many of our regular contributors—including me—as well as other writers.
Our next book, Bright Lights, Twin Cities, will be published June 1 by Thought Catalog. It features 35 writers, six illustrators, and three photographers sharing diverse and irreverent perspectives on our home state of Minnesota. I co-edited the book with Becky and Katie as well as Colleen Powers, and I contributed chapters about Minnesota history (as we sort of know it), Minnesota exceptionalism(s), and biking in the winter (it doesn’t suck any more than driving in the winter does).
